Viral fever is a common illness characterized by an increase in body temperature due to a viral infection. Various viruses, such as influenza, rhinovirus and coronavirus, can cause it. These infections are highly contagious and spread through respiratory droplets, contaminated surfaces or close contact with infected people.

Typical symptoms include fever, chills, body aches, headache, fatigue, sore throat, runny nose, cough and loss of appetite. Symptoms usually last a few days, and rest with plenty of fluids helps most people recover.

Viral fever, the flu and a cold overlap a lot. The flu usually starts suddenly with high fever and strong body aches, while a cold is milder and mostly affects the nose and throat. A doctor can examine you and, if needed, advise tests to tell them apart.

Rest, drink plenty of fluids, eat light food and take fever medicine only as advised by your doctor. See a doctor if the fever lasts more than three days, goes very high, or comes with breathing trouble, rash, severe headache or persistent vomiting.

Wash your hands often, avoid close contact with sick people, cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing, keep surfaces clean and stay home when unwell. Staying up to date with recommended vaccinations also helps.
